Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Yinka Alaseyori, has publicly appealed for understanding and forgiveness following the backlash that trailed her comments on the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State.
The singer came under criticism after a video surfaced online in which she encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers amid the country's worsening security challenges. While her message was intended to inspire faith and spiritual support during difficult times, some Nigerians interpreted her remarks as dismissive of the pain and frustration experienced by victims' families and concerned citizens.
In response to the growing criticism, Alaseyori released an emotional apology video, clarifying that her comments were never meant to undermine the gravity of the situation or invalidate the concerns of Nigerians.
According to the gospel minister, the clip that generated controversy was taken from a much longer prayer session where she interceded for the abducted children, their families, security agencies, government institutions, and the nation as a whole.
Expressing deep regret over the misunderstanding, she pleaded with those who felt hurt by her words to forgive her, stressing that she would never intentionally make anyone feel ignored or unheard.
“Good day everyone, I did a video of about 1 and half hour two days ago, praying for the kidnapped children, grieving families, government parastatal, the military, Nigeria land, and everybody in pain. But when I woke up yesterday I discovered that some well meaning Nigerians are feeling offended because I made them feel unseen or their voices unheard. You know me too well that I will never make anybody feel like that.
“I discovered that the trending video was cut out of the video I made. Mothers, please don’t be angry with me. I beg you in the name of Jesus Christ, you will never bury your children. I beg you in God’s name, please forgive me if I ever speak as if I’m insensitive,” she said.
The singer's apology has since generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians accepting her explanation and acknowledging her intentions, while others maintain that public figures should be more careful with their comments on sensitive national issues.
The incident highlights the emotional tension surrounding insecurity in Nigeria, particularly cases involving kidnapped children, as citizens continue to demand stronger actions from authorities while grieving families await justice and the safe return of their loved ones.
