Chinese technology giant Xiaomi has expanded its electric vehicle lineup with the launch of the SkyNomad, a large family-oriented SUV designed to strengthen the company's position in China's highly competitive automotive market ahead of its planned entry into Europe next year.

The new model marks Xiaomi's latest push to diversify its growing electric vehicle business as it seeks to increase deliveries after first-half EV sales reached only about one-third of its annual target. The company is also navigating softer consumer demand in the world's largest auto market amid a slowing domestic economy.

Known globally for its smartphones, smart home products and consumer electronics, Xiaomi has increasingly turned its attention to the automotive sector, with electric vehicles becoming an important contributor to its revenue over the past two years.

Unlike the company's SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV series, which emphasize driving performance, the SkyNomad has been designed with families in mind.

Xiaomi describes the vehicle as an "intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV," highlighting its spacious interior and flexible cabin layout for larger households.

Extended-Range Technology Targets Family Drivers

Leading the new lineup is the flagship N90 Max, a seven-seat SUV that combines battery-electric driving with extended-range technology to reduce concerns about charging and long-distance travel.

The model features a 76-kilowatt-hour battery, a 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline range extender and a 60-litre fuel tank.

Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles, extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) are powered primarily by electric motors, while the gasoline engine serves as an onboard generator that recharges the battery or supplies electricity when additional power is required.

Speaking at the launch event, Xiaomi Chief Executive Lei Jun said the company designed the vehicle to better meet the needs of larger families.

"Six seats are not enough for families ... If we compare a vehicle to a house, we can freely arrange our space and decorate," Lei said.

The company describes the N90 Max as "a house you can move," reflecting its focus on interior comfort, adaptability and family-oriented features.

Long Driving Range and New Vehicle Platform

Priced at 299,900 yuan (about $44,400), the N90 Max offers a combined driving range of up to 1,705 kilometres (1,059 miles), according to Xiaomi.

The SkyNomad range is built on the company's newly developed Kunlun vehicle architecture, which Xiaomi said was created specifically for larger sport utility vehicles with configurable interiors and greater cabin flexibility.

The platform is expected to underpin future family-focused models as the company broadens its electric vehicle portfolio.

Pre-Orders Open Ahead of September Launch

Xiaomi said customers can begin placing pre-orders for the SkyNomad immediately, with deliveries scheduled to begin in September.

The launch comes as competition intensifies in China's electric vehicle market, where established automakers and technology companies are racing to introduce new models while competing aggressively on pricing, technology and driving range.

For Xiaomi, the introduction of the SkyNomad represents another step in its ambition to become a major player in the global automotive industry, with the company preparing for a planned expansion into European markets next year.
