The supernatural horror follow-up will reunite the original film's director, Mikael Håfström, with its lead stars, with production expected to begin in early 2027.

Hollywood actors Natalia Dyer and Elijah Wood have joined the cast of an upcoming sequel to the 2007 supernatural horror film 1408, alongside original stars Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack, who are negotiating their return to the franchise.

The development marks the return of a horror story that gained a strong following after its original release nearly two decades ago, with the new instalment expected to introduce a fresh storyline while retaining connections to the first film.

According to exclusive information reported by Variety, Dyer will take the lead role in the sequel, while Wood will feature in a supporting capacity. Jackson and Cusack are expected to reprise their original characters, although they will occupy secondary roles in the new production.

Mikael Håfström, who directed the original film, is returning to direct the sequel. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Verheiden. Details of the new storyline and the characters played by Dyer and Wood have not been disclosed.

The project has attracted a notable production team, including Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Richard Saperstein of Bluestone Entertainment, Spyglass Media Group and Frank Mayor as producers.

Bluestone Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment are financing the production, while FilmNation will handle international distribution rights and share domestic representation with WME Independent.

The company is also expected to introduce the project to potential buyers at the American Film Market (AFM). Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with John Papsidera, known for his casting work on The Odyssey, serving as casting director.

Based on Stephen King's 1999 short story of the same title, 1408 follows Michael Enslin, a writer portrayed by Cusack, who investigates reports of paranormal activities in hotel rooms while researching his book about haunted hotels.

His investigation takes him to room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, where several guests have reportedly suffered mysterious and violent deaths.

Jackson played Gerald Olin, the hotel's manager, who attempts to discourage Enslin from entering the room because of its disturbing history.

The original film, released by MGM in 2007, became a commercial success and developed a cult following, grossing approximately $132 million worldwide against a production budget of just $25 million.

Cusack had previously expressed interest in returning to the story, describing it as the one film he would consider making a sequel to.

Speaking to People in 2025, the actor said: “I was lucky that I never had the desire, or no one asked me to do any sequels. There’s one that I think would be interesting to do, which would be ‘1408.’ Just because … I think today, you know, most movies suck.”

Dyer, who gained international recognition for her portrayal of Nancy Wheeler in Netflix's hit science-fiction horror series Stranger Things, is among the new generation of actors expanding their presence in film and television.

She is currently working on HBO's true-crime limited series The Trial of Louise Woodward. Her upcoming projects also include the romantic comedy Goodbye Girl, alongside Kiernan Shipka and Cole Sprouse.

Her previous credits include Yes, God, Yes, a coming-of-age comedy directed by Karen Maine.

Wood, widely recognised for playing Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings franchise, has also established a growing presence in horror films.

His recent appearances include Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, The Toxic Avenger and Osgood Perkins' The Monkey. He is also expected to return as Frodo in Andy Serkis' upcoming The Lord of the Rings sequel, The Hunt for Gollum.

In addition, Wood has joined the cast of Netflix's television series The Gentlemen for its third season.

Meanwhile, Cusack remains known for several acclaimed films, including Say Anything, High Fidelity and Being John Malkovich. After establishing himself as one of Hollywood's leading actors during the 1990s and early 2000s, he has maintained a relatively low public profile in recent years.

His recent film credits include the 2025 thriller Fog of War, as well as the international productions Detective Chinatown 1900 and Decoded.

Jackson, on the other hand, continues to maintain a busy film career following his performances in major productions such as Pulp Fiction, The Avengers and The Hateful Eight.

His latest screen appearances include The Beast, released on October 9, and Just Play Dead. His upcoming projects include J.J. Abrams' The Great Beyond, The Incredibles 3 and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The return of Håfström, Jackson and Cusack, alongside the addition of Dyer and Wood, is expected to renew interest in the 1408 franchise as preparations begin for its next chapter.
