    Conjoined Twins Separated Successfully

The team of surgeons that successfully separated a pair of conjoined twins last week was congratulated by Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo over the weekend. Papo said that the successful surgery was once again a sign that Gauteng was "the centre of medical excellence".
The operation, which took place at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and took six hours, was undertaken by paediatric urologist Dr Ivan Heerden, paediatric surgeon Dr Ernst Muller, and plastic surgeon Prof P Coetzee, while paediatric surgeon Dr Marisa de Villiers, orthopaedic surgeon Dr R Goller, and asaesthesiologist Dr Sandra Speijkerman were also involved.

The twins were joined by several of their organs in their abdomen and pelvis, and once the twins have recovered from the separation, they will have to undergo further surgery on their external genitalia and their lower colons.
