After a
keenly contested maiden edition of the Sterling bank Sketchamania Challenge,
Stephen Wayne, a 22 year-old 300 level student of Industrial Relations &
Personnel Management of the University of Lagos carted home the grand prize of
N1,000,000 (One million naira). The Sterling
Sketchamania
challenge is a corporate social responsibility initiative of Sterling bank Plc
aimed at celebrating the creativity of the Nigerian student and helping to
bring their dreams to reality.
The
challenge required Nigerian students in tertiary institutions from all over the
country to sketch suitable uniforms for specific job functions such as security
guards, drivers and customer service officers in the bank.
At a
befitting Grand finale to the weeks and tonnes of hard-work churned in by all
concerned, the ten finalists showed off their designs to an eager audience beaming
with excitement and expectation for the eventual unveiling of the top 3 winners
at the University of Lagos Main Auditorium last weekend.
While all
the 10 finalists were astounding in different ways, Stephen’s designs got the
judges’ nod for exceptional ease with which they matched creativity and
functionality. He was followed closely by Sipe Olanrewaju, a 400 level Creative
Arts student of the University of Lagos who won N500,000 and Staveley Temidayo,
an Industrial Design student of Yaba College of Technology who won N250,000.
The judges,
Uche Nnaji, MD Ouch Couture Ltd and Sasha P, entertainer and MD/CEO, Eclectic
designs noted that the Sketchamania Challenge was a novel
initiative and that it was commendable that a bank was recognising and
celebrating the creativity of the Nigerian youth. They added that it was vital
for a designer to assemble a good team to effectively interpret his/her
sketches; a consideration in deciding the winners of the Sketchamania Challenge.
Speaking at
the event, the Group Head, Strategy & Communications of Sterling bank,
Shina Atilola noted that Sketchamania was one the many
initiatives Sterling bank was embarking upon to meet the peculiar needs of the
Nigerian youth; adding that all the finalists will be given consolation prizes
in recognition of their talent and to further encourage them; while urging Nigerian
students to look out for more from the stables of Sterling bank Plc.
Finalists
at the maiden edition of Sketchamania included Arigbede
Kayode of the University of Lagos, Amina
Odey of the Radford University College, Ene Anyogo of the University of Nigeria,
Nsukka, Kayode Durosinmi Etti of Lagos State University, Aimanoshi Dania of the
University of Lagos, Balogun Ayodeji of the Yaba College of Technology and
Adegoke Oluwaseyi of the University of Lagos.
Some other
highlights of the evening were performances by notable stars like Olamide
and ace comedian, Akpororo working with Deza who combined to leave the
audience reeling with unending bouts of laughter all through. Upcoming acts and dance groups such as Same,
Kininso and Characoros also added glamour to the event.
