Jonathan Orders Army To Release Captured Boko Haram Insurgents

President Goodluck Jonathan has directed the Defence Headquarters to release Boko Haram members arrested and detained in connection with terrorist activities in the Northern part of the country.
Brigadier General Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information stated this in a statement issued in Abuja.
Jonathan had declared a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa on May 14 2013 as well as deployment of the military to the affected states.

The statement said the move was in furtherance of the Federal Government’s position in response to requests by the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Reconciliation.
Olukolade said “the measure which is in line with presidential magnanimity to enhance peace efforts in the country will result in freedom for suspects, including all women under custody.

“The details of the directives and those to benefit from this gesture have been communicated to field units and the Joint Task Force.”
He added that the beneficiaries would be released to the state governors who would be involved in further rehabilitation before the suspects would be released to their respective community leaders
    and relations.

On Monday the Defence Headquarters said it captured about 120 members of the Boko Haram insurgents at the funeral of one of their commanders killed in Maiduguri by the special military force.
