Union Accuses Leader Of Misappropriating N150m Loan

The Lagos State Council of the Agriculture and Allied Employees’ Union of Nigeria has accused its National President, Mr. Simon Anchaver, of misappropriating the union’s N150m.

The AAEUN alleged that Anchaver collected the money from the Akure branch of formerly Enterprise Bank Plc, now Heritage Bank, to buy a property in Abuja to serve as the union’s national headquarters without the members’ consent.

It also alleged that the national president collected about N8m from members for housing project without anything to show for the execution of the project.

Addressing journalists during the May Day rally in Lagos on Sunday, the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of AAEUN, Mr. Obafemi Oyenubi, said the issue had been reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the police.

But Anchaver had denied all the allegations, describing them as false and malicious.

In spite of the denial, Oyenubi asked the anti-graft agency to invite Anchaver for interrogation on how he spent the union’s money.

He said, “The AAEUN is indebted to the tune of over N2.6bn and we are not happy about the development, this is why we want to put things right when Anchaver is still in office.

“There will be a delegate conference of the union in July, but we want to put the house in order before the election.

“The AAEUN national president diverted the union’s money to his personal use. He also took loan and asked the bank to spread the loan into the accounts of over 300 members as beneficiaries of the loan with forged signatures.”

According to Oyenubi, members only got to know about the opening of accounts in their names through the text messages sent to them by the bank.

He said, “When the bank’s officials were confronted, they said our president took N150m loan on behalf of members and that we were all beneficiaries of the money.”

But Anchaver dismissed the allegations and asked Oyenubi to account for the membership dues he collected from members of the Lagos State Council of the union, instead of wrongly accusing him of a non-existent issue.

According to him, Oyebubi has been suspended as the chairman of the Lagos State council of the union as a result of fraud allegedly perpetrated by him.

Anchaver said, “Oyenubi is an illiterate; he should go and face the criminal case filed against him at the National Industrial Court in connection with the mismanagement of the Lagos State Council of the AAEUN, instead of misleading the public.”
