    Nipsey Hussle, Burna Boy, Sho Madjozi win BET Awards

    Burna Boy won the Best International Act Award
    The 2019 BET Awards kicked off with a performance by Cardi B, who came into the night leading with 7 nominations and, not surprisingly, picked up the award for album of the year for her “Invasion of Privacy.” Other top nominees included Drake with 5, and Beyonce, Travis Scott and J. Cole, each with four. Bruno Mars, 21 Savage, Childish Gambino, H.E.R. and Ella Mai also received multiple nominations. The show, which is in its 19th year, aired live from downtown Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater .

    The BET Awards recognize winners across 20 categories in a “celebration of black culture.” Connie Orlando serves as executive producer along with Jesse Collins, CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment.
    Picking up the first award from best new artist, Lil Baby told Variety, “It’s an amazing feeling. I can’t even believe it.”

    Eritrean-American rapper Nipsey Hussle who was killed in March this year, was one of the big winners at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards over the weekend.
    Nipsey, who was shot dead in March at the age of 33, won the awards for Best Male Hip-Hop artist, and the Humanitarian award.
    “Nipsey is such an important part of our community, in particular the fact that he focused on servicing his community, staying in his community, and trying to uplift the community he was a part of,” BET Networks President Scott M Mills said.

    Burna Boy (Nigeria) was named the winner of the Best International Act Award. The ‘On the Low’ hitmaker competed against AKA (South Africa), Mr Eazi (Nigeria), Aya Nakamura (Mali/France), Dave (UK), Giggs (UK) and Dosseh (France).

    South African artist Sho Madjozi triumphed in the Best New International Act category against Teniola Apata (Nigeria), Headie (UK), Octovian (UK), Jokair (France) and Nesly (France).
    “Limpopo Champions League we did it,” Sho Madjozi wrote on Facebook. “Thank you so much for voting for me.”

    US artist Cardi B took home the Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Album of the Year awards. Other winners Snoop Dogg, Beyoncé, Lil Baby, Migos, Travis Scott and Drake.

    The BET Awards celebrate African Americans and other American minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment.
