Qatar Ready to Host 2019 World Athletics Championships

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), in partnership with the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the Qatar Anti-Doping Commission (QADC), will deliver an unprecedented integrity programme during the 10 days of competition.

Few days to the World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, the city is ready.
On Monday, the Qatari capital was working on the final details to host the famous IAAF competition for the first time.

Designated to host the various events, the Khalifa International Stadium with its futuristic architecture will come alive from September 27 to October 6, 2019 to athletes the world over.

Most of the events will only take place after sunset due to high temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius at night. Organisers say they are in a position to welcome athletes and the public, thanks to an air conditioning system to counter the heat.

This 2019 edition includes 49 events ː 24 women’s and 24 men’s and for the first time a mixed event, the 4 × 400 metre relay. The Khalifa International Stadium was also selected to host World Cup football matches in 2022.

More than 2,000 athletes from around 200 countries are expected to take part in the world championships, which will be held in the Middle East for the first time.

One of the key policy decisions taken by the AIU ahead of the championships is to transfer samples collected from the athletes of the host nation to a laboratory abroad in order to avoid any potential conflict of interest and associated risks. The policy will come in force in Doha and will continue at future editions of the World Championships

However, Doha is not one of the traditional hotbeds of the sport and the event takes place at a time of year when the season is usually over. Nonetheless, the IAAF president, Seb Coe, has insisted that the championships will help track and field expand into new territories.

Organisers have promised a raft of innovations for the event, including two miniature cameras in each starting block that will show the first pictures of athletes’ faces in the 100m moments before they hear the starting pistol, and capture the explosion of energy as the athletes leave the blocks.
