    COVID-19 Cases Hit New Record High of 1,664 in Nigeria

    Since early December 2020, there has been a spike in coronavirus cases in Nigeria as the country continues to record relatively high daily infections.

    Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a total number of 1,664 new novel coronavirus cases in the country in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

    It is the first time the figure has exceeded 1,500 in 24 hours. 1,664 new Nigeria coronavirus cases recorded Wednesday, another new record.

    This represents the highest number of daily cases recorded since the outbreak of the pandemic, a 22.9% increase compared to 1,354 cases recorded the previous day and 38.2% compared to 1,204 recorded on Monday.

    NCDC in the last 24 hours reported 5 additional deaths from COVID-19 complications as the spike in new cases continues to feed through into fatalities.

    The health agency said in its daily update on the pandemic situation via its Twitter handle that the latest discoveries had increased the tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country to 94,369

    NCDC also confirmed that 903 patients were discharged on Wednesday. Which include 388 community recoveries in Lagos State, 261 in Kaduna State, 87 in Plateau State and 20 in Imo State managed in line with guidelines.

    Lagos, which recorded the most new cases, confirmed 642 infections. FCT had the second highest number of new cases with 407 infections, followed by Plateau with 160.

    The breakdown of the latest COVID-19 figure on state-by-state is as follows: Lagos-642, FCT-407, Plateau-160, Kaduna-83, Rivers-62, Adamawa-47, Nasarawa-38, Abia-29, Edo-28, Anambra-27, Niger-24, Ogun-24, Imo-15, Oyo-14, Kano-12, Osun-12, Borno-9, Delta-7, Enugu-7, Bauchi-5, Ekiti-5, Sokoto-5 and Jigawa-2.

    NCDC has so far tested 980,046 persons since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on 27 February 2020.

    In summary according to NCDC on the 6th of January 2021, 1,664 new confirmed cases and 5 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

    Till date, 94,369 cases have been confirmed, 77,299 cases have been discharged and 1,324 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
