Samsung Electronics, South Korea's tech giant, said on Thursday that it aimed to achieve its carbon neutrality by 2050 to join global efforts to tackle climate change.
Samsung, one of the world's largest manufacturers of
semiconductors and electronic devices, said in a statement that it planned to
achieve net zero direct and indirect carbon emissions by 2050.
To achieve the goal, Samsung said it joined RE100, a global
corporate initiative dedicated to pursuing 100 percent renewable energy, noting
that it aimed to match electric power needs with renewable energy by 2050 for
all global operations.
"Samsung is responding to the threat of climate change
with a comprehensive plan that includes reducing emissions, new sustainability
practices and the development of innovative technologies and products that are
better for our planet," said Han Jong-hee, vice chairman and chief
executive at Samsung Electronics.
Samsung said it will invest in and research new technologies
to develop energy-efficient products, increase water reuse and develop carbon
capture technology.
It added that it will invest over 7 trillion won (5 billion
U.S. dollars) in its environmental initiatives by 2030, including for reducing
process gases, conserving water, expanding electronic waste collection, and
lowering pollutants.
