A positive development has surfaced in the ongoing negotiations between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as both sides reported advancements over the weekend.
On August 19, ASUU issued a 21-day strike notice to the federal government following its National Executive Council meeting at the University of Ibadan, where various demands were discussed.
During a recent meeting aimed at preventing the strike, a sub-committee was established to evaluate ASUU’s requests, while the government committed to finding sustainable solutions to the ongoing issues. Both parties agreed to reconvene on September 6.
Professor Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, addressed the union on Friday, recognizing the joint efforts to enhance the education sector.
Boriowo Folasade, the director of press and public relations at the ministry, stated in a press release that significant progress has been achieved. The minister highlighted the importance of continued collaboration and information gathering to resolve remaining concerns.
She noted, “A joint committee focused on critical issues has made substantial progress, facilitating valuable exchanges of information. Nevertheless, additional efforts are necessary to finalize decisions and implement concrete actions.”
