Afrobeats artist Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, known as Ayra Starr, has spoken out regarding the comparisons made between her and South African singer Tyla.

The two artists garnered attention online after both received nominations in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards.

In her first public comments on the matter during an interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr emphasized that these comparisons do not impact her friendship with Tyla.

She referred to Tyla as her "home girl" and "G," stating, “Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music."

Let’s support each other; why not? Afrobeats and African music are on the verge of global dominance, and we need to unite to achieve that. There’s no need for comparisons.”

Ayra Starr, who recently released her album ‘The Year I Turned 21,’ gained widespread recognition with her hit single ‘Bloody Samaritan’ in 2021.

That same year, she launched her debut studio album “19 and Dangerous,” featuring other popular tracks like “Away,” “Rush,” and the remix of “Bloody Samaritan” with American artist Kelly Rowland.

With a multitude of awards and honors, Starr has emerged as one of Africa’s most promising talents.

She was among the Nigerian artists nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards, with “Rush” earning her a nomination in the Best African Music Performance category, making her the youngest Nigerian female artist to achieve this milestone.

Ultimately, she lost the award to Tyla, the South African singer.
