The Federal Government has allocated ₦10 billion for capital expenditures and ₦1.8 billion for operational costs in the ministry's 2025 budget.
During the budget defense session held on Tuesday, Minister Idi Maiha, along with senior officials and agency heads, outlined the financial requirements of the ministry to the joint committee.
Maiha noted that the ministry, which was separated from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, commenced operations three months ago but is encountering significant obstacles, including inadequate office space, facilities, and essential operational tools.
Currently, the ministry is temporarily located within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, with ongoing negotiations to secure a permanent office from the Federal Capital Territory administration. Despite the budget limitations, Maiha emphasized that the allocated funds would provide a foundational framework for the ministry's establishment.
He underscored the ministry's primary objectives, which include addressing the impacts of climate change, creating economic opportunities within the livestock sector, and involving youth and women in sustainable practices.
Maiha also mentioned that capital projects would be allocated across geopolitical zones according to specific needs, with the aim of attracting both local and international investments. The ministry plans to initiate a comprehensive awareness campaign through national and local media to promote its goals and initiatives.
In light of these discussions, the joint committee urged the minister to submit a supplementary budget that more accurately reflects the financial needs of the ministry.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Livestock Development, Wale Raji, raised concerns regarding the extent of assistance from the Presidential Implementation Committee for the establishment of the ministry. He emphasized the need for a more substantial budget to fulfill the expectations of the Nigerian populace.
Similarly, Senate Committee Chairman Musa Mustapha expressed the committee's commitment to supporting the ministry in fulfilling its objectives.
“This meeting is a foundational step, but the ministry must accelerate its efforts and provide progress reports on the challenges outlined for us to offer necessary interventions,” he said.
