Afrobeat artist Portable has surrendered to the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department following a declaration of being wanted.
Musician Portable has surrendered to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) located in the Yaba region of Lagos.
This information was verified by our correspondent through a statement from Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, on Wednesday.
Portable, whose real name is Habeeb Okikiola, has been declared wanted by the police in Ogun State due to his failure to cooperate with law enforcement regarding an alleged attack on state officials.
In a video posted yesterday, Portable claimed to be a “madman” undergoing treatment at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro, Abeokuta. He made this assertion while appealing to both Nigerians and the Ogun State Government in light of the police's announcement of his wanted status.
On Wednesday, the police dismissed his assertions, reiterating that the singer is still wanted in connection with the alleged assault on government officials.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, emphasized that Portable must turn himself in for further investigation.
“Portable will come and submit himself. He cannot be in the psychiatric hospital in Aro. Everybody knows he is a wanted person. If he is in any facility, the police must be informed. He is a wanted man,” Odutola said.
The police have issued a wanted notice for Portable following an alleged violent incident involving three officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development at the Ota Zonal Office. The officials—TPL Onabanjo Abidemi, TPL Raymond Lateef, and TPL Ridwan Oyero Akinlesi—reportedly faced an attack during an enforcement operation in Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu Ota, Ogun State.
The officials stated that they initially met Portable’s father at Odogwu Bar, who informed them that the singer was not present. Shortly thereafter, Portable allegedly appeared with a firearm and, accompanied by nine associates, assaulted the unarmed officials. Although the officials were injured, they managed to escape and report the incident to the Ota Area Command, which subsequently referred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
While nine of Portable’s associates have been apprehended, the singer is said to have fled the scene and has been evading capture since then.
The police indicated that they had sent multiple invitations to Portable, urging him to come to the command’s headquarters, but he has consistently disregarded these requests without offering any legal representation.
“Following his repeated evasion, the Ogun State Police Command has obtained a valid court order declaring him wanted,” Odutola added.
In an Instagram post, Portable asserted that his association with Senator Adeola Solomon (Yayi), representing Ogun West, has resulted in a fabricated accusation against him. He further emphasized his mental health condition and ongoing treatment at a psychiatric facility.
“I fear government. I am a Federal Government liability. I am a madman and take medications regularly. You can confirm from Aro Hospital—I have a patient card. I am not a thief; I help people,” Portable insisted.
In response, Damilare Oloyede, Special Assistant on New Media to Senator Adeola, clarified that the Senator is not involved in Portable’s legal issues.
“Portable should be responsible for once. Senator Yayi won’t help him in this predicament—it is purely a result of his irresponsibility, lack of decorum, and display of lunacy (as he himself admitted). Name-dropping won’t help him evade justice,” Oloyede said.
He underscored Senator Yayi's adherence to the law and intolerance of irresponsible conduct as a public servant.
“For the umpteenth time, Senator Yayi is a responsible leader and will never tolerate irresponsible acts around him,” Oloyede concluded.
