The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), specifically the Lagos State chapter, is aiming for a decrease in egg prices with the ongoing government subsidy for farmers' feed. Mojeed Iyiola, the Chairman of PAN in Lagos, shared this insight during a recent interview.

This initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government's N500 million Ounje Eko Farmers Subsidy Programme, which offers farmers a 25 percent subsidy on animal feeds, including poultry and fish. Iyiola expressed hope that if this program continues beyond its initial four-week trial, it could lead to lower egg prices.

He stated, “The distribution of the feeds from the Lagos State Farmers’ subsidy programme, which commenced February 5, is a fantastic idea of the government. The future is looking bright for poultry farmers; we are indeed happy and grateful to the Lagos State Government for the intervention. To a limited extent, we will begin to feel the impact of the intervention in the poultry sub-sector."

“We will definitely see a drop in the price of eggs and other poultry produce if this intervention continues beyond the four-week test run,”

As of now, the price for a crate of eggs has surged to about N5,000 to N6,000 in January 2025, up from N2,800 to N3,000 in early 2024. Back in November 2024, PAN’s Director General, Onallo Akpa, mentioned that the federal government's intervention fund for poultry would help bring down egg prices.
