Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri has revealed that she received “insane death threats” following a controversial post by billionaire businessman Elon Musk.

The incident occurred in February 2024 when Musk shared a fake report claiming Disney was considering Edebiri as a replacement for Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Musk reacted to the report by simply stating, “Disney sucks.”

Edebiri believes Musk’s response amplified the fake story, leading to a wave of death threats and racial slurs directed at her. Reflecting on the incident, she shared on her Instagram story, “Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it’s the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man. LMAO. So not only is he [Elon Musk] double Sieg Heil-ing fascist, he’s an idiot but anyway.”

The actress’s statement highlights the unintended consequences of Musk’s online influence and the toxic backlash she faced as a result.
