The match began with an early breakthrough as defender Sam Adekugbe netted an unassisted goal in the 3rd minute, his second of the season. The Galaxy responded in the 39th minute when Gabriel Pec, assisted by Miguel Berry and rookie Elijah Wynder, scored their first goal of the campaign.
The game seemed headed for a draw until the 87th minute, when Brian White rose to head in a pinpoint cross from Pedro Vite, securing the win for Vancouver. The goal was White’s first of the season, while Vite notched his first assist of the year.
Off the field, the match was marked by a vocal protest during the U.S. national anthem, with fans booing in response to former President Donald Trump’s comments about Canada and proposed tariffs.
Vancouver’s goalkeeper, Yohei Takaoka, made one save, while Galaxy’s Novak Micovic stopped two shots in his sixth career start.
The Whitecaps, under new head coach Jesper Sørensen, have now won both of their opening matches, including a dominant 4-1 victory over Portland in their season opener. Rising star Jayden Nelson shone in that game, matching Alphonso Davies’ feat of a goal and three assists in a single match.
Vancouver will next host CF Montreal on Saturday, while the Galaxy will look to rebound at home against St. Louis City on Sunday.
