Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano overcame adversity and drama to capture his first win of the 2024 season in an overtime finish at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday. The Team Penske driver surged from a 27th-place start to claim the checkered flag in a gritty, methodical performance marked by resilience and redemption.

From Setback to Comeback

The win came just one week after a disappointing postrace inspection at Talladega turned Logano’s fifth-place finish into a 39th-place result due to a spoiler infraction. Compounding the frustration was an on-air spat with teammate Austin Cindric during that same race — a conflict the pair reportedly resolved in the days leading up to Texas.

Despite starting deep in the field after a poor qualifying run, Logano slowly climbed the leaderboard. He only led seven laps — but they were the most important, including the decisive overtime restart where he pulled ahead of teammate Ryan Blaney and held off a charging Ross Chastain to take the win.

“Just slowly, methodically… kept grinding,” said Logano. “After what happened last week, to be able to rebound and come right back, it’s a total '22' way of doing things.”

This marked Logano’s 37th career Cup Series win and his first in 11 races this season.

Race-Defining Moments

  • Michael McDowell briefly threatened for the win after a bold two-tire stop vaulted him up 15 spots, but his late crash triggered the final caution and sent the race to overtime. He finished 26th.
  • Ross Chastain finished second after getting past Blaney, who settled for third.
  • Carson Hocevar, 22, became the youngest polesitter in Texas history but faded after an early pit stop and a late accident, finishing 24th.
  • Denny Hamlin’s 21-race streak of lead-lap finishes ended in flames when his engine issue on lap 75 forced him out early, making him the first retirement of the race.
  • Kyle Larson notched his 68th career stage win and sixth at Texas — both records — by winning Stage 2. Austin Cindric won Stage 1.

Standings Snapshot

Despite Logano’s breakthrough, the top of the standings remains unchanged with William Byron, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, and Chase Elliott holding the top four spots. Notably, Elliott’s own winless streak now stretches to 38 races.

As the season heats up, Logano’s comeback at Texas serves as a reminder of the champion’s grit and the unpredictable nature of NASCAR racing.
