The declaration was formally made on Sunday, June 8, 2025, in Abuja, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
According to Mrs. Ajani, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, conveyed the federal government's felicitations to Nigerians, marking "an uninterrupted 26 years of civil rule." The Minister underscored the profound significance of June 12, stating, "June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured." He further reflected on the nation's democratic strides, remarking, "The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope renewed than ever."
Mr. Tunji-Ojo also reiterated the unwavering commitment of President Bola Tinubu's "Renewed Hope" administration to the foundational principles of democracy. He emphasized the universal value of a system where the freely expressed will of the people determines Nigeria's political, economic, social, and cultural frameworks.
It is important to note that federal government-declared public holidays are observed across all states and impact the private sector, with the exception of essential services. While many private businesses, including grocery stores and some factories, often continue operations on public holidays, the general populace will benefit from the extended break.
