Twelve years after stepping onto the global stage with her debut album Once Upon a Time, Tiwa Savage is taking stock of her journey in music—acknowledging both her early triumphs and the path ahead.

The Nigerian Afrobeats star used the anniversary to connect with fans and share a heartfelt message about the significance of the project that launched her into prominence. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Savage called the album a deeply emotional milestone, describing it as the starting point for many of the achievements that would follow.

“Wow…. My debut album ‘Once upon a time’ turns 12 years already??” she wrote. “This album was the beginning of so many milestones for me. It’s actually very emotional for me but I’m so grateful to God, and to every single person that’s stood by me since day one.”

Released in 2013, Once Upon a Time remains one of the defining projects of the Afrobeats era, featuring hits such as Kele Kele Love, Love Me, Love Me, Love Me, and Eminado. The album helped establish Tiwa Savage as one of Africa’s most influential female artists, blending contemporary Afropop with soulful melodies and bold storytelling.

Her artistry and commanding vocals set new standards for women in the genre, inspiring a generation of artists who followed. Beyond commercial success, Savage’s debut marked a cultural moment, broadening global attention to Nigerian pop music at a time when Afrobeats was still expanding its international footprint.

Looking Back—and Ahead

Marking the anniversary wasn’t only about nostalgia. Savage also used the moment to hint at her next chapter. She announced that she is preparing to release a new project, promising that it would carry the same spirit of authenticity and creative freedom that defined her debut.

“I poured my heart into it and now, 12 years later, I’m still here, still standing and ready to release another iconic body of work,” she wrote.

She described the upcoming album as a return to artistic roots—unbothered by industry trends or streaming pressures.

“A project that’s raw, creating something I’ve always wanted to make not influenced by streams or trends, just like my first album. This journey has come full circle. Thank you to my amazing soldiers for riding with me. Still feels like the beginning, maybe because the best is still yet to come ….“

A Lasting Legacy in Afrobeats

Over the past decade, Tiwa Savage has become a mainstay of the African music scene and a respected global voice. From winning awards to performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, she’s built a reputation for blending Afrobeat rhythms with pop appeal while maintaining lyrical depth and honesty.

Her evolution has included international record deals, collaborations with global stars, and a growing role as a cultural ambassador for Nigerian music. But if her message to fans is any indication, the next phase of her career may see her diving even deeper into personal expression, unfiltered by commercial considerations.

As fans celebrate the anniversary of Once Upon a Time, there’s anticipation about what’s next for one of Afrobeats’ most enduring and innovative artists—an artist who, 12 years on, insists the best is still yet to come.
