Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, has responded to the controversy surrounding his recent comments about fans, clarifying that his remarks were taken out of context and made in jest.

The uproar began after the singer was quoted as saying he doesn’t beg anyone to be his fan and prefers to have “rich fans,” a statement that triggered widespread criticism on social media. In a series of posts shared via his Instagram story, Burna Boy explained that the comment was part of a private joke with his band and was not directed at the public.

He stated that the situation had been “spun” into a narrative that he does not appreciate his supporters. The ‘Last Last’ hitmaker added that he is currently dealing with personal challenges but is not seeking sympathy or intervention from the public.

“If you hate me so much either kill me or leave me alone,” he wrote, stressing that he loves those who show him love and respects those who respect him. He urged critics to allow him space as he navigates his own struggles.

Beyond addressing the backlash, Burna Boy called attention to broader humanitarian concerns, echoing demands for an end to insecurity and conflict in Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan. “Free Sudan, free Congo, free Nigeria,” he added.

The singer’s statement has drawn mixed reactions but also renewed conversations about the pressures faced by public figures and the complexities of online scrutiny.
