Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence that victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs will serve as a major psychological boost for Nigeria ahead of their quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2025.

The Nigerian side is currently fine-tuning preparations for the World Cup playoffs, which kick off next Thursday in Morocco, where the team will first focus on securing qualification before turning attention to continental glory.

Speaking to CAF Online, Chelle emphasized the importance of building momentum through the playoffs, describing them as a “crucial target” that could define the team’s mindset going into the AFCON.

“Before AFCON, there’s a crucial target: the World Cup play-offs. The goal is to win those matches,” Chelle said.
“If we arrive on the back of play-off success, stopping us will be difficult.”

The Super Eagles are expected to head into the playoffs with a mix of experienced internationals and emerging talents as the coaching crew continues to fine-tune tactical options. A strong showing in Morocco, Chelle believes, would not only secure World Cup progress but also build the confidence required to reclaim Africa’s biggest football prize.

Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, have been drawn in Group C of the tournament alongside Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda—a group many analysts consider competitive but navigable for the Super Eagles if they maintain consistency.

Chelle’s focus on discipline, adaptability, and mental strength has reportedly resonated within the squad, as the coach looks to restore Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s most formidable footballing nations.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also to be held in Morocco, will offer Chelle his first major tournament test as head coach of the Super Eagles. With the dual challenge of qualifying for the World Cup and lifting the continental trophy, the months ahead promise to be decisive for both Chelle and his team.
