Nigeria’s quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title got off to a winning start on Tuesday, but head coach Eric Chelle was quick to strike a reflective tone after his side’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania, openly acknowledging that not all of his decisions paid off on the night.

The Super Eagles secured three valuable points in their opening match of the 2025 AFCON campaign, overcoming a spirited Tanzanian side that proved difficult to contain for long stretches. Semi Ajayi put Nigeria ahead in the first half, giving Chelle’s men early momentum and appearing to justify the coach’s tactical approach.

Tanzania, however, responded with determination and found an equaliser through Charles M’Mombwa, exposing lapses in Nigeria’s organisation and briefly shifting the balance of the contest. The setback did not last long, as Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead just two minutes later with a decisive finish that ultimately settled the match.

Despite the positive result, Chelle did not shy away from self-criticism in his post-match remarks. The coach admitted that some of the choices he made before and during the game were questionable, even if the final outcome was favourable.

“I made a lot of choices; some were good, some were not good,” Chelle said, offering a candid assessment of his performance on the touchline. He added that his decisions were guided by his broader philosophy, stressing his authority and responsibility as head coach. “I told the journalists that I have my vision and I’m the coach.”

The comments suggest Chelle is already looking beyond the result, aware that stronger opponents later in the tournament may punish the kind of mistakes Tanzania were unable to fully exploit. While the victory provides a solid platform, it also highlights areas for improvement as Nigeria continue their push for continental success.

With confidence boosted but lessons clearly learned, the Super Eagles will aim to build on their opening win and deliver more assured performances as the tournament progresses.
