Coinbase announced on Wednesday that it will begin allowing users to trade stocks and event contracts tied to real-world outcomes, marking a significant expansion beyond its cryptocurrency roots. The move positions the exchange to compete more directly with traditional brokerages and diversify its offerings amid increasing competition in the crypto space.

Event contracts enable customers to speculate on the outcome of real-world events, ranging from sports and politics to financial markets. While some industry players argue these contracts fall under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s oversight, certain state regulators have attempted to assert authority, citing concerns that event contracts resemble betting and could encourage speculative behavior among retail investors. “Fragmented policies that vary by state ultimately harm consumers who need consistent, transparent rules,” a Coinbase spokesperson said.

The expansion also includes the upcoming launch of tokenized stocks, which will allow users to trade equities around the clock. Coinbase has partnered with Kalshi for the event contracts initiative and suggested additional partnerships could follow.

Max Branzburg, head of consumer and business products at Coinbase, emphasized the company’s competitive positioning: “We aim to offer the greatest variety of contracts available on one platform. We expect existing Coinbase customers will bring all of their assets under one roof, while we reach a new subset of consumers.”

Coinbase’s expansion reflects a broader trend among investment platforms, including Robinhood, Interactive Brokers, and several startups, to offer multiple asset classes to attract retail investors. Analysts at Citizens Financial estimate that prediction markets currently generate nearly $2 billion in revenue—a figure that could quintuple by 2030 as institutional participation grows.

The strategic shift is designed to reduce Coinbase’s reliance on crypto trading while appealing to a broader customer base seeking diversified investment opportunities.
