The incident, which occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, sparked public outrage over the dangers posed to both the influencer and other road users. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed Peller’s detention for further investigation.
“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained Habeeb Hamzat aka ‘Peller’, subsequent to the viral video in which he was seen driving recklessly, leading to a dangerous road crash while live-streaming, thereby endangering his life and that of other road users,” the statement read.
Authorities described the influencer’s actions as “extremely dangerous,” warning that the stunt could have resulted in fatal consequences. The act was also characterized as a “deliberate attempt to commit suicide” while simultaneously putting innocent road users at risk.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe. “The outcome of the investigation will be made public, and the suspect will be charged to the court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law,” the police said.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, used the incident to issue a stern warning to social media influencers and the public against exploiting online platforms to engage in unlawful or dangerous acts.
“Social media influencers, content creators, and members of the public are strongly warned to desist from using social media platforms to engage in or promote reckless, dangerous, unlawful, or criminal acts,” CP Jimoh said. He added that such lawlessness “will not be tolerated” and that the full weight of the law will be applied to any offender.
The incident has reignited concerns about risky stunts by content creators seeking online engagement, with many Nigerians calling for stricter enforcement to prevent similar acts. Road traffic crashes remain a major public safety issue in Lagos, often linked to speeding, distracted driving, and disregard for traffic regulations.
The Lagos State Police reiterated its commitment to prosecuting anyone whose actions endanger lives, emphasizing that social status or online influence will not shield offenders from legal consequences.
