French energy giant TotalEnergies announced on Tuesday that it has signed a 21-year agreement to supply 1 terawatt-hour of renewable energy to support Google’s data centres in Malaysia.

The power will be generated by the new Citra Energies solar plant in Malaysia, which is slated to begin construction in early 2026. The long-term supply contract is expected to commence in the first quarter of next year.

This deal follows a separate November agreement under which TotalEnergies committed to providing renewable energy to Google’s data centres in Ohio, United States.

As the demand for computing power surges — particularly with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence — data centres operated by major tech companies are consuming unprecedented amounts of electricity, often exceeding the capacity of domestic utilities. The partnership with TotalEnergies is part of Google’s broader strategy to source clean energy and support its sustainability goals while meeting the energy-intensive demands of AI and other digital services.
