The Enugu State Government has been urged to consider awarding educational scholarships to the children of late Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, as part of its efforts to support vulnerable families and promote access to education.
The appeal was made by Mr Dominic Nwuzor, a former manager of the late actor, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
Nwuzor, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Don Singles International, managed the celebrated entertainer for over two decades until his death in March 2024. He said the scholarship appeal was aimed at securing the educational future of the actor’s children following the loss of their father, who was the family’s mainstay.
He noted that the late Mr Ibu hailed from Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State and had brought pride to the state and the nation through his exceptional talent and contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
According to Nwuzor, providing educational support for the children would help them attain self-reliance and preserve the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to entertaining millions across Africa.
“We have appealed for scholarship opportunities for the children and will continue to do so, so that something meaningful can be done for them,” he said.
He expressed confidence in the disposition of the Enugu State Governor, Mr Peter Mbah, describing him as a leader with a strong commitment to education and the welfare of vulnerable citizens.
“His Excellency, Gov. Peter Mbah, is a leader with a large heart who places high value on education, particularly for those in need. We hope he will consider offering scholarships to the children of a man who used his God-given talent to make Enugu State and Nigeria proud across Africa and beyond,” Nwuzor added.
Mr Ibu remains one of Nigeria’s most beloved comic actors, celebrated for his natural humour, distinctive facial expressions and impeccable comedic timing.
Renowned for portraying humorous and often clumsy characters, his performances resonated deeply with audiences, earning him widespread acclaim and the popular description as “the man who made Africa laugh.”
His iconic roles, particularly in the popular “Mr Ibu” movie series, made him a household name and cemented his place as a central figure in African comedy and Nollywood history.
