The controversy surrounding the comparison between Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and contemporary music star Wizkid has drawn a measured response from Femi Kuti, the Grammy-nominated musician and eldest son of the late pioneer.
Reacting to the debate during an interview with ARISE TV via Skype from Los Angeles, Femi Kuti expressed disappointment that the issue gained traction, describing it as a misplaced priority. He noted that he maintains cordial relationships with both parties at the centre of the controversy—his younger brother, Seun Kuti, and Wizkid—and wished the matter had not arisen.
The debate followed comments attributed to Wizkid, which sparked public backlash after he reportedly claimed to be “bigger” than Fela while responding to criticism from Seun Kuti over comparisons between the two artistes.
Femi Kuti argued that such discussions distract from more pressing national concerns, stressing that musicians—particularly younger artistes—should channel their influence toward demanding better governance rather than engaging in what he described as trivial disputes.
While distancing himself from the exchange, he maintained that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti occupies a unique position in Nigeria’s cultural and musical history and should not be compared with any other artiste.
According to him, Fela remains the foundational template for Afrobeat and a figure deserving of reverence rather than rivalry. He added that the late icon should be placed “in a sector of his own,” where he is simply idolised and respected.
Femi Kuti also declined to comment directly on the disagreement between Seun Kuti and Wizkid, citing his personal ties to both. He described Seun as his brother and Wizkid as someone he regards like a son.
The veteran Afrobeat musician is currently in Los Angeles, where he is expected to receive Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony scheduled for this weekend.
