Speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the singer recounted how he had been fully booked to minister at a church convention, with all arrangements already concluded, before concerns were raised by the church’s leadership committee. The issue, according to Eben, was his outfit in the artwork for one of his albums, where he appeared in shredded denim jeans.
Eben said the organiser later contacted him, clearly distressed, to explain that the committee had reviewed the album cover and felt his clothing did not align with their expectations of how a Christian minister should present himself. Despite the jeans not being revealing or inappropriate, the committee reportedly ruled that his appearance was unsuitable.
“They had already invited me for their convention, and everything was arranged. Then they saw my album artwork where I wore a shredded denim jean,” Eben said. “The organiser called me, very upset, and mentioned that the committee felt they could not accept me as a minister due to the type of jeans I was wearing.”
Reflecting on the incident, the singer—who has served in gospel ministry for more than 20 years—expressed disappointment that outward appearance could outweigh a person’s faith, calling, or message. He noted that such judgments can distract from the true essence of worship and spiritual leadership.
Eben used the moment to encourage churches to focus more on genuine worship, spiritual growth, and leading people closer to God, rather than placing excessive emphasis on clothing choices. According to him, true ministry is defined by impact and devotion, not by how a minister dresses.
