Described as a citizen-friendly measure, the rebate seeks to encourage voluntary compliance while reducing the financial burden on motorists. The government highlighted that clear and legible number plates are essential for traffic management, crime detection, and digital vehicle tracking. Faded or illegible plates, it said, pose significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.
The rebate applies exclusively to worn or unclear plates and does not cover new vehicle registrations. Motorists are advised to access the service at the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA station across Lagos, and to avoid using unauthorised agents.
The announcement follows a nationwide increase in vehicle number plate fees in 2025, introduced by the Joint Tax Board to reflect enhanced security features and rising production costs. Standard private and commercial plates now cost N30,000, with higher fees applicable for articulated, dealer, fancy, and government plates.
While the exact percentage of the discount was not disclosed, the three-month window provides motorists an opportunity to regularise their documentation at a reduced cost and contribute to safer, more secure roads across Lagos.
