Anticipation is building in the Nigerian film industry following the release of the official teaser for Onobiren, a new feature film slated to arrive in cinemas on March 6, 2026. The teaser, unveiled by Laju Iren Films, signals the company’s formal entry into brick-and-mortar cinema distribution, with tickets set to go on preorder from January 30.
Rooted in culture and meaning, Onobiren—which translates to “woman” in the Itsekiri language—centres on themes of womanhood, faith, and African identity. The film is positioned as a celebration of women and the communities that uplift them, while offering a faith-infused narrative that reflects lived African experiences.
The project is written and executive produced by Laju Iren and directed by Famous Iraoya, known for Finding Nina. Filming took place across Warri and Lagos, marking the most ambitious production undertaken by Laju Iren Films to date in terms of scale and logistics.
The cast brings together a mix of veteran and contemporary talents, including Patience Ozokwo, Deyemi Okanlawon, Bisola Aiyeola, Ruby Akubueze, Chude Jideonwo, and Desmond Bryce, among others. Their involvement has further heightened expectations for the film’s release.
Onobiren was produced with support from Africa No Filter and CC Hub Creative Economy, reinforcing its focus on authentic storytelling and creative innovation. The film has also gained early international and industry recognition, earning selections at Entertainment Week Africa and the London Lift Off Festival.
Since the teaser dropped in late December 2025, it has generated significant conversation online, drawing praise for its emotional tone, visual treatment, and cultural grounding. With months still to go before its cinema debut, Onobiren is already shaping up as one of the most closely watched African film releases of 2026.
