OpenAI and SoftBank Group have agreed to jointly invest $1 billion in SB Energy, a SoftBank-owned company that provides data-centre and power infrastructure, as part of their Stargate project.

SB Energy disclosed the investment on Friday, saying the funding will support the expansion of critical infrastructure needed to power large-scale artificial intelligence systems.

The Stargate project is aimed at strengthening data-centre capacity and energy supply to meet the growing demands of advanced AI development, including high-performance computing and large language models. The investment highlights the increasing importance of reliable power and infrastructure as AI technologies scale rapidly.

SB Energy focuses on building and operating energy and data-centre solutions, positioning it as a key asset in SoftBank’s broader technology and AI strategy. The collaboration with OpenAI underscores the deepening partnership between the two firms as they seek to secure the backbone required for next-generation AI innovation.

The move comes amid intensifying global competition in artificial intelligence, with major tech companies investing heavily in data centres, power generation, and infrastructure to sustain future growth.
