Senegal secured their second AFCON title with a tense 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in a final overshadowed by contentious officiating and emotional scenes. The decisive moment came through a superb strike from Pape Gueye, while Morocco were left to lament a missed penalty after an otherwise impressive campaign on home soil.
Across the competition, Senegal captain Sadio Mané emerged as the tournament’s defining figure. His leadership, consistency and decisive contributions earned him the Golden Ball as Player of the Tournament, underlining his enduring influence on the continental stage.
Morocco, despite falling at the final hurdle, dominated several of the individual awards. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was named Best Goalkeeper after a series of commanding performances that anchored Morocco’s run to the final. Forward Brahim Díaz claimed the Golden Boot with five goals, becoming the first player in AFCON history to score in five consecutive matches in a single tournament.
Morocco’s conduct throughout the competition was also recognised, as they received the Fair Play Award for their sportsmanship and discipline.
As the dust settles, AFCON 2025 will be remembered not only for Senegal’s hard-fought triumph, but also for the individual brilliance and intense rivalries that once again showcased African football at its finest.
