...Signals Renewed Focus on Youth Empowerment
The year has opened with renewed momentum for youth-focused entrepreneurship across Africa, following the launch of the 2026 Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) Entrepreneurship Programme on January 1.
The development was announced via social media, with Oge Elumelu unveiling the call for applications through a special episode of her podcast shared on Instagram. In the accompanying video, the rationale behind the Foundation’s work was explored, offering insights into its long-standing mission to support African entrepreneurs with funding, training, mentorship and access to global networks.
During the episode, founder Tony Elumelu highlighted the philosophy that inspired the creation of the Foundation, describing it as a personal commitment to impact humanity through structured and sustainable empowerment. He explained that while vision is critical, meaningful impact depends on assembling the right people and institutions capable of translating ideas into action. Elumelu also reiterated calls for African governments to prioritise policies and environments that enable young people to thrive economically.
Since its establishment, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has positioned itself as one of the continent’s most influential platforms for grassroots entrepreneurship, empowering thousands of young Africans annually and fostering partnerships with international development agencies and global institutions.
Beyond the Foundation’s institutional impact, recent events have again placed Elumelu’s personal generosity in the public spotlight. Nigerian actor and entertainer Charles Okocha recently received a $50,000 cash gift from the business leader after releasing a tribute song celebrating Elumelu’s lifestyle, philanthropy and influence on Africa’s banking sector. The actor later shared a lighthearted celebratory video with family and friends, further amplifying the moment online.
Observers note that the episode aligns with a broader pattern of deliberate, often understated philanthropy that has characterised Elumelu’s public life. His approach consistently reflects the belief that Africa’s long-term transformation depends on investing in its people, particularly its youth, whether through formal programmes or spontaneous acts of encouragement.
This year’s activities also carry a tone of reflection and empathy. Earlier, Elumelu announced the cancellation of the Elumelu family’s annual end-of-year celebration, a decision taken in honour of staff members who lost their lives in the 2025 Afriland Towers fire incident. The move, widely described as compassionate, reinforced his emphasis on human value over ceremony.
As 2026 unfolds, these developments point to a continued blending of enterprise, philanthropy and social responsibility, reinforcing Tony Elumelu’s reputation as a business leader whose influence extends well beyond corporate boardrooms.
