In a move aimed at expanding access to professional development opportunities, the United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the launch of a series of free online English-language courses designed to enhance workplace communication and career readiness.

The initiative was disclosed on Thursday via the mission’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. According to the announcement, the courses are tailored to support learners seeking to improve their professional skills while positioning themselves for long-term career success.

Participants will be able to study at their own pace, engage with interactive content, and connect with a global community of learners, making the programme accessible to individuals balancing education with work or other commitments.

The courses are being offered through the U.S. Department of State’s Online Professional English Network (OPEN) programme, an initiative focused on strengthening English communication skills in high-demand professional fields. The programme specifically targets learners looking to build practical language skills that translate directly into workplace effectiveness.

Enrollment for the current cycle opened on January 5, 2026, and will remain open until March 23, 2026. Classes are scheduled to run from January 5 to March 30, 2026.

A range of specialised courses is available under the programme. These include English for Business and Entrepreneurship, which focuses on developing business-oriented vocabulary and effective professional communication; English for Tourism Professionals, designed for individuals working in travel, tourism and hospitality-related fields; and English for Career Development, which helps learners craft strong resumes, navigate job applications and perform confidently during interviews.

The US Mission encouraged interested participants to register through its official online learning platform, noting that the programme is part of its broader effort to support skill development and employability among learners in Nigeria.

By offering the courses at no cost, the initiative aims to remove financial barriers to professional education while equipping participants with language skills that can open doors to new career opportunities locally and internationally.
