The European Commission on Wednesday said TikTok has been highly cooperative with regulators as Brussels investigates whether the platform failed to curb interference during Romania’s 2024 presidential election.

Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier told reporters that the company has actively engaged with the EU executive since formal proceedings were launched late last year. He said TikTok’s approach demonstrates that constructive dialogue with regulators can yield progress during sensitive investigations.

“When you want to engage with the Commission, we are very happy to engage with you,” Regnier said, adding that TikTok has taken a number of measures in response to the Commission’s concerns.

The comments come as part of an ongoing probe opened by the European Union in December 2024 under the bloc’s sweeping digital rules. The investigation focuses on whether TikTok breached its obligations to limit the spread of disinformation and other forms of manipulation linked to the Romanian presidential vote.

EU authorities have stepped up scrutiny of major social media platforms amid growing worries that foreign or domestic actors could exploit online services to influence democratic processes. The case against TikTok is one of several enforcement actions launched under the Digital Services Act, which requires large platforms to assess and mitigate systemic risks, including threats to electoral integrity.

While the Commission has not disclosed specific details about the measures TikTok has implemented, officials have previously emphasized that cooperation and remedial steps can be taken into account as investigations progress. The probe remains ongoing, and potential outcomes range from commitments to operational changes to significant financial penalties if violations are confirmed.

For now, Brussels has signaled that TikTok’s engagement stands in contrast to a more adversarial posture sometimes adopted by other technology firms facing EU oversight, as regulators continue to test the reach and effectiveness of Europe’s new digital rulebook.
