A win for Marseille keeps the title dream alive — a loss could hand the initiative to PSG and open the door for Lyon.
Marseille’s trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday is shaping up as one of the most consequential matches of the Ligue 1 season. With Marseille currently third in the standings, the game represents a pivotal moment in the title race.
PSG still leads the league, but Marseille sits just nine points behind the defending champions and seven points adrift of second-placed Lens. A victory at the Parc des Princes would not only narrow the gap but also reinsert Marseille into the title conversation — for the first time in months. A defeat, however, could effectively end Marseille’s chances of lifting their first league trophy since 2010 and would also allow Lyon to potentially leap into third place in the race for Champions League qualification.
Marseille’s Attack Thrives — But Defense Struggles
Marseille’s season has been defined by an exciting offense. English forward Mason Greenwood has been particularly prolific, scoring 22 goals across all competitions, while the team has outscored PSG in Ligue 1 with 46 goals compared to PSG’s 43.
Yet, despite their attacking strengths, Marseille’s defensive vulnerabilities continue to undermine their campaign. The team has repeatedly conceded soft goals and appears to crumble under pressure — a recurring issue coach Roberto De Zerbi has struggled to resolve.
Recent Head-to-Head: Marseille Has PSG’s Number
Despite their flaws, Marseille has consistently challenged PSG this season. They recorded a 1-0 win in September, and in the Champions Trophy clash last month they were seconds away from another victory before PSG equalized late and won the penalty shootout.
The Wider Title Picture
Lens could return to the top of the table if they beat Rennes at home on Saturday and PSG lose on Sunday. Meanwhile, Lyon — level on points with Marseille but ahead on goal difference — travel to Nantes on Saturday, riding an 11-game winning streak.
Nantes, however, remain in trouble, sitting in 16th place despite a change in management. On the French Riviera, Nice hosts Monaco on Sunday in a match that could shape the battle for European qualification. Both teams have shown improvement in recent weeks.
Players to Watch
Endrick (Lyon): The 19-year-old Brazilian striker’s loan move from Real Madrid has been exceptional. After scoring a spectacular goal in the French Cup on Wednesday, he now has five goals in five games for Lyon.
Anthony Lopes (Nantes): The veteran goalkeeper will face his former club Lyon — where he spent nearly 500 games — as he tries to keep Nantes in the hunt.
Ciro Immobile (Paris FC): The veteran Italian striker has joined Paris FC and hopes to revive his scoring form. Immobile is one of Europe’s most proven forwards, with 304 goals in 587 club appearances, including 17 goals for Italy.
Injuries and Suspensions
PSG will be without key right back Achraf Hakimi, who is suspended after a red card at Strasbourg last weekend. They will also miss winger Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia, sidelined with an ankle injury.
Lyon is awaiting news on midfielder Corentin Tolisso, who is recovering from a hamstring injury and has missed the last three games.
