The dramatic fourth-round clash lived up to pre-match expectations, with world No. 4 Daniil Medvedev predicting beforehand that the encounter would be a fiercely physical contest with no clear favourite.
“I would be surprised if it’s a one-sided match,” Medvedev said ahead of the showdown. “I think it’s going to be a very, very physical battle where you don’t know who’s going to win.”
His forecast proved remarkably accurate. The match stretched beyond two and a half hours, culminating in a tense third-set tiebreak where the outcome remained uncertain even at 5-5. The quality, intensity and drama combined to produce what many observers are already calling one of the best matches of the year.
Draper, who recently returned from a lengthy injury layoff, admitted before the contest that he entered with modest expectations. Simply being able to compete again, he said, was already a positive outcome. That cautious mindset appeared evident early in the match as the Brit started somewhat tentatively against the player he described as “the best tennis player there is.”
However, momentum began to shift in the second set. Energised by the lively night crowd, Draper grew increasingly confident and aggressive, chasing down seemingly impossible shots while dictating rallies with powerful groundstrokes.
The British left-hander unleashed a series of forehand winners, sharp backhand returns and delicate passing shots that even Djokovic could only applaud. As the rallies intensified, the Serbian star was pushed into gruelling exchanges that at times left him bent over trying to catch his breath.
In the decisive tiebreak — typically a moment where Djokovic excels — Draper showed remarkable composure. The Brit attacked boldly, particularly from his backhand wing, and held his nerve to seal the victory.
Djokovic later reflected on how close the contest had been.
“I got the crowd backing me, and I felt the energy,” he said. “It was like, ‘Maybe I’m going to take this one.’ It was so close, so close. Just a few unfortunate mistakes from my side. Tiebreak, 4-3 up. 5-all as well. That’s tennis.”
The win keeps Draper’s title defence on track, but he faces a quick turnaround. Less than 24 hours after the marathon encounter, he is set to face Medvedev in the next round.
Medvedev, meanwhile, progressed comfortably earlier in the day with a routine 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alex Michelsen. The Russian has been in impressive form, extending his winning streak to eight matches following his recent title triumph at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The upcoming clash will mark the second career meeting between Draper and Medvedev. Their previous encounter came two years ago at the Italian Open in Rome, where Medvedev claimed a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
With Draper coming off a physically demanding battle and Medvedev enjoying a smoother path through the draw, the matchup presents a fascinating contrast. The Brit’s powerful left-handed serve and aggressive baseline play will test the Russian, while Medvedev’s flat, low-skidding backhand could pose problems for the 6-foot-4 Draper.
Whether Draper can recover in time to produce another high-quality performance remains to be seen, but his thrilling victory over Djokovic has already ensured his campaign at Indian Wells will be remembered as one of the tournament’s highlights.
