Despite a competitive performance for much of the contest, Chelsea’s resistance collapsed in the closing stages after an error from Jørgensen gifted PSG the lead and opened the door for a late scoring spree.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior had opted to start Jørgensen in place of regular first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, a decision that ultimately backfired on a difficult night for the Danish shot-stopper.
For more than an hour, Chelsea had looked capable of matching the French champions. Twice they came from behind in an open and entertaining encounter that initially appeared to justify their recent victory over PSG in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
However, the game turned dramatically in the 74th minute. With the score tied at 2-2, Jørgensen attempted to play out from the back but saw his pass intercepted by Bradley Barcola. The move quickly developed as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia laid the ball off for Vitinha, who calmly lifted a lob over the stranded goalkeeper to restore PSG’s lead.
The mistake sparked a collapse. Tempers flared moments later when Chelsea winger Pedro Neto escaped a potential red card after shoving a ballboy, while Kvaratskhelia added further punishment with two late goals to transform a tight contest into a convincing victory for the hosts.
Chelsea captain-for-the-night Enzo Fernández openly showed his frustration with Jørgensen during the match, at one point throwing the ball toward his goalkeeper after another shaky clearance led to a disallowed PSG goal.
Ironically, Rosenior’s decision to select Jørgensen was partly based on the goalkeeper’s ability to play the ball out from the back. Earlier in the match he had produced several excellent saves to keep Chelsea in contention after PSG took an early lead through Barcola.
The opening goal came in the 10th minute when Ousmane Dembélé delivered a cross that João Neves nodded down for Barcola, who controlled the ball before firing PSG ahead.
Chelsea responded well. Defender Malo Gusto levelled the score after being found in space by Fernández, his shot squeezing past PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.
PSG quickly regained the lead through Dembélé, whose powerful low strike followed a rapid attacking move involving Achraf Hakimi. The French champions’ attacking trio of Dembélé, Barcola and Désiré Doué repeatedly stretched Chelsea’s defence.
The visitors struck back once more after the break. Neto capitalised on a mistake by Nuno Mendes, surged past Marquinhos and delivered a cross for Fernández to score the equaliser.
At 2-2 the match appeared evenly balanced, but Jørgensen’s costly error shifted momentum decisively in PSG’s favour. Kvaratskhelia then added a fourth goal late in the game before sealing the rout in stoppage time after Hakimi’s cross exposed Chelsea’s stretched defence.
The final scoreline may have been harsh on Chelsea after a spirited display, but it highlighted the inexperience and defensive fragility of Rosenior’s youthful side. They now face the daunting challenge of overturning a three-goal deficit when the teams meet again in London next week.
