Electricity distribution in parts of Lagos and surrounding areas has been disrupted following a drop in power generation on Nigeria’s national grid caused by gas supply shortages.
Ikeja Electric, one of Nigeria’s major electricity distribution companies, issued a public notice on Friday acknowledging the situation and apologising to customers affected by the ongoing outages. The company said the disruption was linked to constraints in gas supply, which has reduced electricity generation capacity nationwide.
According to the Disco, the shortage has forced increased load shedding across several feeders within its network, affecting residents and businesses that rely on steady electricity supply.
The company said it recognised the inconvenience the situation may be causing to daily activities and expressed regret over the disruptions.
“We understand the inconvenience the current power supply challenges may be causing you, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your daily activities,” the company said in the notice.
Ikeja Electric explained that the power cuts were not limited to its network alone but were tied to broader generation challenges affecting the national grid.
“The situation is due to gas supply constraints affecting power generation on the National Grid, which has led to increased load shedding across our feeders within the network,” the statement added.
Despite the current challenges, the company assured customers that stakeholders in the power sector were working to address the generation shortfall and stabilise electricity supply across the grid.
Management also noted that it was closely monitoring developments and would continue to provide updates as the situation improves.
“We are closely monitoring developments and will continue to keep you informed as improvements occur,” the Disco said, while thanking customers for their patience and cooperation during the period of reduced supply.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Independent System Operator confirmed that the country’s electricity generation has recently fallen below the 4,000-megawatt threshold due to persistent gas supply challenges affecting thermal power plants.
In a statement titled “Gas Constraints Lead to Temporary Reduction in Power Generation,” the grid operator disclosed that national power generation stood at 3,940.53 megawatts as of 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, highlighting the continuing impact of fuel shortages on gas-fired power stations across the country.
