Popular Nigerian content creator and streamer Carter Efe has opened up about his relationship with Afrobeats star Wizkid, revealing a mix of admiration, disappointment, and lingering respect for the award-winning singer.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Pidgin, Carter Efe admitted that while he remains a huge fan of Wizkid’s music and artistry, he has struggled with what he described as the singer’s personality and lack of reciprocity despite years of public support.
The comedian and online personality said his admiration for Wizkid’s sound, style, and creative influence has never changed, even though he feels the relationship has been one-sided.
“My relationship with him? I love Wizkid. I won’t lie. I love Wizkid. I love his craft, man. But I have issues with his personality. I showed that guy love, he didn’t show me love. But I still love his music and style,” he said.
Carter Efe’s comments are closely tied to the success of his 2022 breakout song, Machala, a tribute track inspired by Wizkid’s popular nickname.
The song became a viral sensation across social media and streaming platforms, significantly boosting Carter Efe’s popularity within Nigeria’s entertainment industry. At the time, many fans viewed the track as a passionate show of loyalty and admiration toward Wizkid and his fanbase.
Despite the success of the record, Carter Efe noted that Wizkid never publicly acknowledged either the song or the support behind it, something he appears to have taken personally.
According to him, the motivation behind “Machala” was never purely commercial. Instead, he described it as a sincere expression of appreciation for an artist whose music and influence he genuinely respects.
Even with his disappointment, Carter Efe maintained that his love for Wizkid’s artistry remains intact, reinforcing the strong influence the Afrobeats superstar continues to have on younger entertainers and fans across Nigeria.
