Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has challenged the widespread belief that movie stars in Nigeria are automatically wealthy, revealing that many actors in the industry are battling financial difficulties behind the scenes.
The actress made the revelation during a recent podcast conversation hosted by actor and filmmaker Baaj Adebule, where she spoke candidly about the realities of life in Nollywood.
According to Rosman, one of the biggest misconceptions people have about actors is the assumption that appearing on television or social media automatically translates to financial success.
“The most overrated misconception about Nollywood stars is that we have money,” she said.
She explained that while some entertainers are financially comfortable, their wealth often comes from businesses, endorsements, or side ventures outside acting itself.
“I don’t know why people assume we have money. Some of us do have money, but from other ventures,” she stated.
Rosman further stressed that many actors are quietly struggling to stay afloat despite the glamour often associated with the entertainment industry.
“But many of us are struggling financially,” she added.
Her comments have sparked fresh conversations about the economic realities within Nollywood, an industry celebrated globally for its creativity and massive output but often criticised for inconsistent pay structures and limited financial security for actors.
Many industry observers say the public frequently judges celebrities based on appearances on red carpets, luxury fashion, and social media lifestyles, without understanding the financial instability that can exist behind the spotlight.
Rosman’s remarks also echo concerns previously raised by several actors and filmmakers who have called for better compensation, improved production structures, and stronger welfare systems within the Nigerian movie industry.
Despite Nollywood’s rapid growth and international recognition, many actors still depend on multiple streams of income, including influencing, entrepreneurship, brand partnerships, and event appearances, to maintain financial stability.
