The newly commissioned facility, known as the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, was established through a collaboration between the Faculty of Arts, the faculty's alumni association and Cityview Hospital Limited. The project is the first faculty-based clinic in the university's history and is expected to bring medical services closer to members of the academic community.
Operating under the supervision of the UNILAG Medical Centre, the clinic is designed to provide prompt healthcare services while reducing the impact of health-related disruptions on academic activities.
Improving Access to Healthcare
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Akanbi Ilupeju, said the project was conceived in response to recurring health concerns experienced by students, especially during examination periods.
He said:
"This project is a major step towards addressing health challenges faced by students, particularly during examination periods, while also ensuring accessible medical care for academic and non-academic staff."
According to the dean, the availability of a dedicated healthcare facility within the faculty will ensure that medical emergencies are handled promptly, allowing students and staff to focus on teaching, learning and research without unnecessary interruptions.
He added that the clinic is expected to significantly reduce disruptions to academic activities caused by health emergencies.
Also speaking at the event, the National Social Secretary of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Mr. Francis Shonubi, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement for the university community.
He said:
"Today is a historic moment for all of us as we gather for the official grand opening of the Cityview Hospital Faculty of Arts Clinic, the first of its kind in the University of Lagos."
Shonubi explained that the initiative reflects a shared commitment to improving the welfare of students and staff by ensuring that quality healthcare services are available within the academic environment.
Clinic to Offer Weekday Medical Services
According to Shonubi, the clinic will operate as a full-service healthcare facility from Monday to Friday, with a standby doctor and nurse available to attend to patients.
The facility will provide healthcare and wellness services exclusively to students and staff of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Creative Arts, offering timely medical attention without the need to leave the faculty premises.
University officials believe the clinic will strengthen healthcare delivery on campus while complementing the services already provided by the UNILAG Medical Centre.
Appreciation to Partners
The Faculty of Arts also expressed gratitude to the Chief Medical Director of Cityview Hospital, Dr. Mutiu Shittu, and his management team for supporting the establishment of the clinic.
The university noted that the partnership demonstrates how collaboration between educational institutions, alumni and the private sector can enhance student welfare and improve access to essential services within the university community.
