COVID-19: Nigeria Records 114 Cases, Total Figures Escalate to 1,095

As the global COVID-19 case tally rises, Nigeria too has witnessed an increase in the number of cases testing positive for the Coronavirus.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced another 114 confirmed cases of coronavirus with the initial 981 cases totalling 1,095 at the late hours of Friday April 24.

In it Twitter handle @NCDCgov disclosed that the new cases were reported in nine states as follows: Lagos recorded 80 cases, 21 cases in Gombe, 5 cases in FCT, 2 cases in Zamfara, 2 cases in Edo, 1 case in Ogun, 1 case in Oyo, 1 case in Kaduna and 1 case in Sokoto

As at 11:30pm April 24, there are 1,095 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. 208 have been discharged with 32 death.

A pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed more than 196,966 people worldwide.

Over 2.8 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some governments are hiding the scope of their nations' outbreaks.

Since the first cases were detected in China in December, the United States has become the worst-affected country, with more than 923,543 diagnosed cases and at least 52,087 deaths.

Africa's 54 countries have so far reported fewer than 29,798 confirmed cases of the disease, just a fraction of the Two Million, Eight Hundred & Twenty-Six Thousand, Five Hundred & Seventy-Three (2,826,573) cases reported globally. But the WHO has warned that the continent could see as many as 10 million cases in three to six months, according to its tentative model.

With the pandemic driving up demand for protective equipment and medical supplies across the world, the African Union said it was working to set up its own joint procurement system.

Meanwhile, the Jack Ma Foundation has donated 300 ventilators, which will arrive in coming weeks. John Nkengasong, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said states without any ventilators would be prioritized as they are distributed.
Ten unidentified African nations were facing the new coronavirus without a single ventilator, he said last week.

Ma, the Chinese billionaire founder of Alibaba Group, has donated thousands of tests kits, masks and protective gear to all African nations.
