Gernot Rohr, the former head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has shared insights about his most memorable match while leading the team.

The 71-year-old German, who is now at the helm of the Benin Republic national team, identified the victory over Zambia in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in October 2017 as his standout match with the Super Eagles.

He emphasized that this particular game secured Nigeria's spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Rohr made these remarks during a pre-match press conference in anticipation of Nigeria’s qualifying match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Benin Republic, scheduled for Saturday evening at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

He reflected on his experiences, stating, “The matches you mentioned were remarkable. My first match here was against Tanzania, which we won. We also triumphed in Zambia. We began our journey with victories against the teams you referred to.”

He highlighted the significance of the win against the newly crowned African champions, Cameroon, calling it a major achievement.

However, he regarded the 1-0 win over Zambia, which ensured World Cup qualification, as his best match.

Rohr noted that although they later faced Algeria and drew, they had already secured their qualification.

His five-year tenure with the Super Eagles included impressive victories over teams such as Zambia, Algeria, Cameroon, Argentina, Poland, and Libya, as well as draws against Brazil and Ukraine.
