On Wednesday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that 97 patients, including those critically injured, were medically evacuated from the Gaza Strip to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for treatment.

Tedros provided updates on the medical evacuation, which took place amid ongoing Israeli attacks, through a post on X.

"Today, in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other collaborators, we successfully evacuated 97 ill and severely injured individuals along with 155 companions from Gaza, marking the largest medical evacuation since October 2023," he stated.

He further explained that the patients were transported from Gaza through Kerem Shalom to Ramon Airport in Israel before continuing their journey to Abu Dhabi for specialized medical care.

The group of patients included 45 children and 52 adults suffering from various health issues, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, congenital disorders, blood and liver ailments, as well as trauma and injuries.

Despite facing significant operational hurdles and security risks, the WHO and its partners managed to facilitate the transfer, establishing a receiving facility at the European Gaza Hospital.

"This intricate operation was executed under considerable time constraints to gather all patients," Tedros remarked.

He also highlighted that a special mission was organized to ensure the timely transfer of 8 patients and 12 companions from Gaza City to the European Gaza Hospital, which also involved delivering fuel for ongoing polio vaccination efforts.

Expressing appreciation for the UAE government's support, he emphasized the need for evacuation corridors to be created through all available routes.

"In the end, the most effective solution for all patients is a cease-fire."
