The 22-year-old, who recently secured the year-end No. 1 ranking for the second time, announced the decision Tuesday on X, citing medical advice. “I have an edema in my right hamstring and the medical recommendation is not to compete,” Alcaraz said. He sustained the injury during last week’s ATP Finals, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets, and was diagnosed with muscle overload and swelling.
Alcaraz expressed his disappointment at missing the tournament. “I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was really looking forward to helping us fight for the Davis Cup,” he said. “I’m returning home with a heavy heart.”
Alcaraz has a strong Davis Cup record, going 6-2 overall and 5-1 in singles since his debut in 2022. Spain last won the tournament in 2019, and the 22-year-old has repeatedly said that winning the Davis Cup is one of his top career ambitions. He also missed the 2023 Davis Cup due to fitness issues. Last year, Spain was eliminated in the opening round of the Final 8 at home in Malaga, ending Rafael Nadal’s final Davis Cup match on a disappointing note.
Alcaraz had been scheduled to lead Spain against the No. 4-seeded Czech Republic on Thursday in the quarterfinals, facing top-20 players Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik.
Despite the setback, Alcaraz enjoyed a stellar 2025 season, winning the French Open and U.S. Open and claiming six Grand Slam titles overall. His withdrawal leaves Spain searching for an alternate leader in their Davis Cup bid.
