...Addresses Stigma Around Single Mothers

Public reactions have trailed new comments from reality TV star and Big Brother Naija Season 4 winner, Mercy Eke, after she shared her perspective on having children outside marriage during a recent podcast appearance.

Eke clarified that although giving birth before marriage is not something she actively desires, she would not terminate a pregnancy if it happened unexpectedly. She added that she hopes to have three children—preferably girls—and emphasized her strong preference for raising daughters.

Speaking more broadly on societal attitudes, Eke argued that the stigma surrounding single mothers is often influenced by economic status. According to her, women who are doing well professionally or financially face far less judgment.

She noted that many successful single mothers still receive marriage proposals, adding that she herself has no shortage of suitors. However, she stressed that her standards remain high and that she has yet to find the qualities she seeks in a partner.

Eke maintained that motherhood, whether within or outside marriage, would not hinder her prospects, stating that she believes the right partner would still come along even if she had a child beforehand.
