In a fresh wave of scrutiny surrounding the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping options, former Nigerian international Yakubu Aiyegbeni has voiced concerns over head coach Eric Chelle’s continued inclusion of Amas Obasogie in national team squads for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and playoffs.

Despite receiving eight call-ups since Chelle took charge, the Singida SC shot-stopper has yet to make his senior debut. His non-involvement throughout the qualifying campaign has fueled debate about the rationale behind his repeated invitations.

Speaking on the Home Turf podcast, Yakubu questioned whether the coach had adequately assessed Obasogie’s abilities, especially with several goalkeepers available in the local league. He noted that previous Super Eagles coaches typically offered at least one or two home-based players meaningful opportunities, arguing that such exposure helps strengthen domestic depth.

Yakubu further challenged Chelle’s evaluation process, asking whether the coach had personally observed Obasogie in action before extending multiple invitations. He suggested that if experience was the goal, a Nigeria-based goalkeeper could have benefited more from such exposure.

Obasogie currently remains behind other established options in Chelle’s goalkeeping pecking order, leaving questions about his role in future squad selections.
